What Are Chakras?

The word chakra means "wheel" in Sanskrit, and it refers to spinning wheels of energy located along the spine. There are seven main chakras, each associated with different organs, emotions, and aspects of your being. When your chakras are open and balanced, energy flows freely throughout your body, supporting physical health, emotional clarity, and spiritual connection.

But when a chakra is blocked, overactive, or underactive, it can create imbalances that show up as fatigue, stress, lack of focus, low self-worth, or physical symptoms.


Meet Your 7 Chakras

Here’s a quick introduction to the seven main chakras and what they represent:


  1. Root (Red) – Grounding, safety, stability, connection to the body and the earth.

  2. Sacral (Orange) – Creativity, pleasure, emotions, relationships, sensuality.

  3. Solar Plexus (Yellow) – Confidence, personal power, motivation, self-worth.

  4. Heart (Green) – Love, compassion, forgiveness, connection, empathy.

  5. Throat (Blue) – Communication, self-expression, truth, authenticity.

  6. Third Eye (Indigo) – Intuition, insight, imagination, clarity.

  7. Crown (Purple) – Spiritual connection, awareness, consciousness, unity.


How to Begin Balancing Your Chakras

You don’t need a complicated routine to start bringing your energy back into alignment. Small, mindful practices can create big shifts over time. Here are a few simple ways to support chakra balance:


1. Deep Breathing

This simple breathing exercise helps you tune into the central energy channel (called the Sushumna in yogic tradition) — the pathway that runs along the spine and connects all seven chakras. As you breathe, imagine your breath gently flowing up and down this line, activating and aligning each energy centre:

  1. Sit comfortably with your spine straight and your eyes gently closed. Take a few natural breaths to settle in.


  2. Inhale slowly, and as you do, imagine your breath rising from the base of your spine (Root Chakra) all the way up through the centre of your body — passing through each chakra — until it reaches the Crown Chakra at the top of your head.


  3. Pause briefly at the top of the inhale.


  4. Exhale slowly, and follow the breath as it flows down the spine, moving through each chakra in reverse order.


  5. Repeat this cycle for 5–10 rounds, allowing your breath to move like a wave of light or energy, gently clearing, balancing, and recharging each chakra as it passes.


You can imagine each chakra glowing or lighting up as your breath flows through it, or simply focus on the sensation of energy rising and falling.


2. Use Healing Crystals

Crystals come into play because they hold stable, high-frequency vibrations - each type of crystal has its own unique energetic signature. When used intentionally, crystals can help rebalance and raise the vibration of your chakras, supporting overall harmony.


Some suggested crystals for each chakra:

You can use crystals in lots of different ways - perhaps placing them on your body during meditation (aligned with the chakra point), carrying one in your pocket or bra throughout the day, wearing crystal jewellery, or keep a stone on your nightstand or under your pillow.


Most importantly, set a clear intention for what you’re calling in, and let the crystal support your energy as you align with it.


3. Set a Daily Intention

Intentions are powerful tools for directing your energy and creating alignment within your body, mind, and spirit. They help you stay connected to your inner self and keep your chakras in energetic harmony throughout the day.


Each morning, take a quiet moment to set a positive intention — here are some intention ideas, inspired by each of the seven chakras:


Root “I am safe, supported, and grounded.”

Sacral – “I embrace joy, creativity, and flow.”

Solar Plexus “I stand in my power and trust myself.”

Heart “I give and receive love with ease.”

Throat – “I speak my truth clearly and kindly.”

Third Eye – “I trust my intuition and inner wisdom.”

Crown “I am connected to something greater than myself.”


Let your intention be a quiet anchor throughout your day — a subtle reminder of your inner alignment and energetic potential.


4. Get Curious about Your Emotions
